Evil Masquerade ”Theatrical Madness” And certainly do the Danish EM continue what they started with their debut, just as the title suggests. Flyman and Co. have however turned a bit more to the craftsmanship of progressive metal. The title track is also as mad and wonderful as the name it carries. Take a bit of the Swedish project Karma, mix it with some Khan (Kamelot) vocals and typical Queen-ish playing around with scales and we are pretty close to the sound. Tommy Hansen who is the man behind the controls seems to be a good choice. He has also been working with bands such as TNT, Helloween and Pretty Maids. The power metal influences are clearly present but in a healthy dose. It’s the harmonies in contrast to the metal concept that is the backbone of EM. We get quite a bit of double bass drums stomping, but only where justified and it changes into hard rock rhythms as soon as it’s needed, just like in the track “The Demolition Army”. A baroque feeling with a musical touch is to be heard in the shortest song (1:40 long). The track is followed by a heavy, almost operatic and close to goth metal piece. Yes, there are many comparisons with different genres. The fact that this is a heavy and genuine production can’t be deprived these Danish musicians. This is, just like the debut, something for us who love much… of everything. And we will certainly get to hear more......... :-) Conny M. |
